I went to my first basic sewing lesson not long after becoming a mum. In hindsight, I guess I was craving some kind of creative outlet in the repetitive chaos that is motherhood.
It wasn’t until after my second child was born that I really pushed my sewing beyond making clothes for my family. I was obsessed with making pretty things, but running out of excuses to make them.
In 2o16, my family made a literal sea-change, and I finally admitted to myself that I wanted to start up my own handmade business. But the heart of Findis Designs came from a visit to my local op-shop, where I found three vintage tablecloths and thought they would make pretty dresses.
I was right.
All of my items are made with love and attention by myself in my home on the Far South Coast of NSW, although I couldn’t do it without my husband who nods and smiles when it’s expected to and takes the kids to the pool far more often than he should have to.
